THE MASON JENNINGS SPECIAL

Produced by Paul Leslie and Jeff Pike

As we travel on the songlines that only dreamers see, we welcome a singer-songwriter with a remarkable ability to write with literary, historical and spiritual themes.  Born in Hawaii, Mason Jennings began to gain acclaim for his music in his adopted Minneapolis. He was hand-picked by music supervisor Randall Poster to perform two Dylan songs, “The Times They Are a-Changin’” and “The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll,” in Todd Haynes’ acclaimed film I’m Not There.  His music has moved people of all ages and walks of life. He joins us to talk about “In the Ever,” his latest release on his friend Jack Johnson’s Brushfire Records.  The interview he gave was as honest and sincere as his songs are.  Join us for music and the truth du jour.

ALASKA

May 15, 2009

So I just got home from Alaska and am getting used to darkness again after a week without. That place is awesome and rugged. I felt really comfortable there. The people are so cool and the wilderness is so beautiful. We ate so much delicious fish and hung out with bald eagles and moose. Meese. Moosians. Moosicans. I ate a thing called a halibut cheek.

The sun being up all night is pretty trippy. That mixed with jet lag made each day seem like three days, which was just fine by me. I was traveling with my friend and tour manager/soundman Chad (who is recovering great from last years surgery!) and one day we flew in a helicopter over massive mountains and onto a huge glacier. We ran around amidst bright blue pools of melted water and drank from a stream. (see photo) There were very very deep crevasses that I like not to think about at night. And we at one point had run around so much that we couldn’t see the helicopter. I made a joke about it. Our pilot Marcus laughed and then he didn’t laugh and then he went to find the helicopter, which was parked on a tiny raised piece of ice. We were really far from any roads or people. It was so peaceful. We could talk quietly and hear each other from thirty yards away. I felt at home. On the helicopter flight back over the mountains Marcus put on some Allison Krauss which was so fine. Thanks to all the cool people we met and all our friends who made our trip so fun. We had a blast and look forward to coming back soon.

The shows the last few months have been so fun. I am looking forward to visiting a bunch of beaches this summer and doing some beach cleanups with Barefoot Wine and Surfrider Foundation. I also am just putting the finishing touches on my new record! I am really excited about it and hope to release it later this Summer. I will be touring behind it with a band this fall.

Have a great Spring. The lilacs are in bloom here. It is heaven.

Lots of love,
Mason
